We all have our sticky points – the times when we find it difficult to move forward or stop having the same conversations or activity loop. For some it is procrastination, for others it is being on the go 24/7 and not stopping to notice the evening sky. Whether you are really bad at structuring your life or plan in too much detail, we all have those triggers which launch these sticky patches.
Whatever it is that is holding you back, the steps out of this “stuckness” follow a similar path
Acknowledgement and Reflection
The first step is to become aware of this behaviour and notice what triggers it. Reflect on the occurrence, how you felt and why you felt that way. A good way to reflect is to journal regularly and you will see the patterns emerging – a sure sign of sticking points.
Assumptions and Blockages
What is stopping you from achieving your objective? What are you assuming that prevents you from moving forward? If you knew that that assumption or blockage didn’t exist, what would you do and how would you go about moving forward. If you knew you do have the confidence/courage/foresight/ability – make a note of what you could achieve.
Taking the first Step
Sometimes, moving forward seems an insurmountable obstacle. So break it down into small steps and write them down. Set yourself small targets which you can measure in some way and feel rewarded when achieved. Remind yourself on a daily basis by writing notes on your mirror/door/journal and acknowledge your achievements
Change doesn’t happen easily, so the pattern of building awareness, acknowledgement, questions, action and reflection is ongoing in our endeavour to become fully integrated with who we are.
